Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication report a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
