A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
